This fantasy epic that did not do well in theaters, but became a Prime Video sleeper hit, has now returned as a streaming success after initially falling off the charts. Prime Video's slate of TV shows tends to be more packed with fantasy releases than the streaming service's movie division. That includes ambitious live-action shows like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time, as well as animated series. When it comes to the latter, the Critical Role world of Exandria has led to the hits The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein.
As for fantasy movies on Prime Video, many of those end up being licensed. That said, 2026's slate of films has led to many theatrical releases that did not end up becoming major hits in theaters, going on to have successful runs on the streaming service, both in the United States and internationally. Those movies include the crime thriller Crime 101 starring Marvel Cinematic Universe actors Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson's sci-fi thriller Mercy, and the fantasy epic Masters of the Universe. The latter Amazon MGM Studios movie has now resurged on Prime Video nationwide.
Masters Of The Universe Is Reclaiming The Power On Prime Video
2026's Masters of the Universe currently stands as the 10th most-watched movie on Prime Video in the United States, according to FlixPatrol. Masters of the Universe was originally released in theaters on June 5. The fantasy epic had a reported budget of $200 million, which means that with a global box office total of $113.8 million, it ended up as a box office bomb. However, when Masters of the Universe came to Prime Video on July 22, it became an instant streaming phenomenon. Naturally, with time, as new releases came to Prime Video, the fantasy movie ended up being phased out of the streamer's charts.
However, the latest take on Masters of the Universe is now back as a Prime Video hit, joining many high-profile movies on Prime Video's Top 10 Movies list in the United States. Right now, the fantasy sleeper hit adds to a list that features titles like Jon Bernthal's spy thriller The Amateur, Tom Cruise's action thriller Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Keanu Reeves' R-rated bloodbath John Wick: Chapter 4, the new Prime Video original rom-com The Love Hypothesis, and more. At the time of writing, Prime Video's most-watched movie in the US is Now You See Me: Now You Don't.
What's The Latest On The Fantasy Epic's Sequel?
Initially, given Masters of the Universe's box office, it seemed like a sequel might not make sense financially for the studio. However, with the fantasy movie's epic run on Prime Video, with Masters of the Universe now returning as a US streaming hit, there is a chance that a Masters of the Universe sequel could be made directly for the streamer. In fact, a sequel was already teased through the debut of Princess Adora, aka She-Ra. That said, no official updates on the status of more Masters of the Universe movies have come from Amazon MGM Studios thus far.
