The Odyssey Box Office Crushes All-Time Christopher Nolan Record

The Odyssey is sailing up the charts with a record-shattering debut.

The new movie is Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's epic poem of the same name, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus opposite a huge ensemble cast that includes Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, and Robert Pattinson. Anticipation for 2026's The Odyssey has been building for some time, to the point that it sold out more than a dozen IMAX screens a full year before its debut on July 17. Accordingly, its domestic debut is expected to be Nolan's best ever for a non-Batman movie, behind only The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Its global debut is looking even better. Per Deadline, as of Sunday morning, The Odyssey is expected to close out Sunday with a cumulative worldwide gross of $264.1 million, comprising $124.5 million from the domestic box office and an additional $139.6 million from international markets. This marks Christopher Nolan's best global debut in history, beating out both The Dark Knight Rises ($249 million) and The Dark Knight ($198 million), as well as his 2023 smash hit Oppenheimer ($180 million), which was his previous non-Batman record-holder.

Overall, this is the second-biggest international debut in history for an R-rated movie, behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover movie Deadpool & Wolverine, which debuted with $233.3 million internationally and $211.4 million at home, eventually climbing to a gross of $1.338 billion worldwide, making it the 23rd highest-grossing movie of all time (and the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever).

With this huge global haul, in one fell swoop, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has launched itself into the stratosphere at the 2026 box office, where it is set to become the 13th highest-grossing movie of the year after just three days in theaters. This means that it will have already beaten the entire global runs of major 2026 movies, including Wuthering Heights ($241.7 million), Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day ($233.7 million), Scream 7 ($208 million), The Sheep Detectives ($130.6 million), Mortal Kombat II ($129.5 million), Send Help ($94 million), and Reminders of Him ($89.1 million).

A strong global launch was an absolute necessity for the Odyssey box office, because the Christopher Nolan film's reported budget is a whopping $250 million. Because big-budget tentpoles often need to earn back two and a half times their production budgets in theaters in order to turn a profit, this could place the movie's estimated break-even point as high as $625 million.

However, given its debut, The Odyssey should have no trouble hitting that benchmark and then some. In fact, if it has a similar trajectory to Deadpool & Wolverine (which it could, considering the fact that its Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 97% is even better than the Marvel movie's 94%), it could eventually leg out to a worldwide gross of $775 million or more by the end of its run.

However, it is entirely possible that The Odyssey could have a much steeper trajectory and rocket up the charts to become a billion-dollar hit. After all, both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises earned more than $1 billion, while Oppenheimer got close, hitting $975.8 million. Christopher Nolan movies also tend to have strong momentum at the box office, bolstered by higher-priced premium large format screenings. The fact that no new wide releases are set to debut during its sophomore weekend also gives it a clear runway to continue raking in cash before Spider-Man: Brand New Day debuts.
