Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for X-Men '97 season 2, episode 4X-Men '97 season 2 just teased the return of yet another mutant team. Now that most of the X-Men have returned after they were split and sent to the past and future, it looks as though Wolverine is on a very particular mission now that he's back in the present.

As seen in the original animated X-Men series and in X-Men '97, there's never really been just one team of mutants. Case in point, X-Men '97 season 2 has already debuted both the government-sanctioned X-Factor and Cable's X-Force within the season's first three episodes. However, the ending of X-Men '97 season 2, episode 4 has just teased the return of a fourth major team.

On the whole, it wouldn't really be an X-Men movie or show without some connection to Wolverine's troubled past with Weapon X. As such, it's looking extremely likely that Logan will soon reunite with other mutants with the same shared history: Team X.

In X-Men' 97 season 2 episode 4's post-credits scene, Wolverine is shown meeting with two major Avengers: Captain America and Black Widow, effectively recreating the iconic Marvel Comics cover of 1963's Uncanny X-Men #268, which featured all three heroes.

Handing Logan a classified Weapon X file out of respect for their past partnership during WWII, Steve Rogers warns him not to go after the people behind the sinister program alone. Confirming that he already has a crew, Wolverien says he's "getting the old band back together", the band in question undoubtedly being Team X.

🐺

Wolverine (Logan)

“I’m the best there is at what I do. But what I do best isn’t very nice.” You’re the fierce loner who acts first and philosophises later — but beneath that adamantium-plated exterior beats a heart that cares far more than you’d ever admit. You’ve been burned enough times to distrust the world, so you keep people at arm’s length, yet you’d throw yourself into any fight to protect the ones who slip past your defences. You don’t need a cause or a manifesto — you just need someone worth fighting for. Like Logan, your greatest strength isn’t your claws or your healing factor; it’s the stubborn refusal to let the people you love face danger alone.

Fierce Protective Resilient Untamed

🧠

Professor X (Charles Xavier)

“Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.” You’re the visionary who sees the best in everyone — even when the world gives you every reason not to. Your greatest power isn’t telepathy; it’s an unshakeable belief that understanding and compassion can bridge any divide. You lead not through force but through hope, building bridges where others build walls. Some call you naive, but you know that real strength lies in extending a hand to your enemy. Like Charles Xavier, you carry the weight of a dream that most consider impossible, and you refuse to let it die.

Visionary Empathetic Diplomatic Hopeful

🧲

Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr)

“Peace was never an option.” You’re the survivor who learned the hardest lesson life has to offer: the world will not protect you, so you must protect yourself. Your conviction is unbreakable and your patience is terrifying — you’ll wait years to set the right plan in motion. You don’t hate humanity; you simply refuse to let your people be victims ever again. Every action you take, no matter how ruthless, is driven by a profound love for those who share your struggle. Like Erik Lehnsherr, you are both revolutionary and tragic — a leader forged in pain who will bend the world before it bends you.

Resolute Strategic Ruthless Unyielding

As seen in the original animated series, Team X was a small group of Weapon X operatives that worked together in the past, consisting of Wolverine, Silver Fox, Maverick, and Sabretooth. Having been brainwashed with major memory manipulation, the team carried out black ops missions for the government. A similar team was featured in live-action in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

In the X-Men: The Animated Series episode "Weapon X, Lies, and Videotape," the members of Team X were briefly reunited at an old Weapon X facility before ultimately going their separate ways. As such, it's almost a certainty that Logan will be reassembling Team X once more in X-Men '97 season 2, episode 5. After all, the episode itself is titled "Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs," an unmistakable callback to the original Team X episode released back in 1995.

Is This How Wolverine Gets His Adamantium Back?

Black Widow and Wolverine in X-Men '97 season 2 episode 4

Naturally, a return to Weapon X could help solve one of Logan's biggest problems: his missing adamantium.

After Magneto ripped the adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton at the end of X-Men '97 season 1 (mirroring the "Fatal Attractions" comics storyline), Logan has been fighting with only his natural bone claws in this new season. However, the trailers for X-Men '97 season 2 have already teased that Wolverine will eventually have his adamantium skeleton and claws restored.

Although Weapon X feels like a way to get Wolverine back to his typical fighting form, it's worth noting how Logan got his metal back in the comics: Apocalypse. On the page, Wolverine's adamantium was restored after he agreed to become one of En Sabah Nur's new Horsemen, a decision he made purely to prevent Sabretooth from becoming one instead. However, X-Men '97 has featured its own twists and tweaks while still being quite faithful to the source material. Perhaps taking on Weapon X will lead to Apocalypse himself?

X-Men '97's season 2 trailers have also shown an appearance from Deadpool, who was only ever teased in the original animated series without making a full debut. As such, introducing Wade Wilson's Merc With The Mouth in a Weapon X-focused episode would certainly make sense (assuming it's not just Morph copying his appearance). At any rate, it's going to be very exciting to see what the future holds for X-Men '97 season 2 with Team X's return.

New episodes of X-Men '97 season 2 release Wednesdays on Disney+ from Marvel Studios.
