Every Charming Piece of the Next ‘Shaun the Sheep’ Adventure Has Been Meticulously Crafted — Even Its Poster
In his film and TV career, Shaun the Sheep has taken on plenty of hats, from big city tourist in the 2015 “Shaun the Sheep Movie” and the hero of an alien invasion movie in its 2019 sequel “Farmaggedon.” But in his latest big screen adventure, he’s gearing up for a role unlike any he’s done before, as the type of mad scientist who would make Victor Frankenstein proud.
IndieWire has an exclusive first look at the new poster for “Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom,” the third film in the “Shaun the Sheep” film series from beloved British stop-motion studio Aardman Animations. The poster depicts a key scene in the film, a Halloween-set parody of classic horror cinema in the vein of Hammer Horror or Universal Pictures, in which Shaun dons a lab coat and goggles to brew a potion for his latest misadventure as the rest of his flock look on in shock.
In addition to the poster, Aardman and the film’s U.S. distributor GKIDS have released a four-minute behind-the-scenes video exploring the work that went into creating the poster, which also gives a glimpse at the creative process from the studio.
Several key creative talent from Aardman give interviews in the behind-the-scenes featurette, including animation director Claire Rolls, photographer Richard Davies, director of photography Charles Copping, and puppets team leader Will Harding, along with GKIDS design manager Cynthia Sega, who all explain the design process behind their work.
Created by Nick Park, Shaun the Sheep originally debuted in the 1995 “Wallace & Gromit” short “A Close Shave,” and received a spinoff TV series in 2007. The show focuses on Shaun, a clever and mischievous sheep on a quiet Northern English farm, as he hatches various plans with his flock to add excitement to their lives, much to the annoyance of their Farmer and his long-suffering sheepdog Bitzer. The animated series has run for seven season and over 190 episodes, with its latest batch of episodes releasing on CBBC in 2025, and has won five International Emmy Awards and two British Academy Children’s Awards.
GKIDS will release “Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom” in American theaters on Friday, September 18. The film will be released by Sky Cinema in the United Kingdom, with StudioCanal handling the film’s release in other international territories.
