Somehow, we are now just a few months away from the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, and the launch is set to be one of the biggest in video game history. What exactly those first few days are going to look like is anyone's guess, but it's certainly going to be a monumental few weeks in the industry, regardless of how good the game ends up being.
Over the last few weeks, things have started to ramp up from a marketing perspective as well, with Rockstar confirming that there will be an extensive preview of the game on Netflix on August 27. Until then, though, the game is also starting to show up more elsewhere, and it's a great sign that everything is still ticking along nicely.
Over on Twitter/X, the official PlayStation profile shared a short trailer video promising that players can "experience unforgettable moments" on the platform. As part of that, several key games for the platform appeared in brief moments, including GTA VI once again.
The two clips included see Lucia driving away from something at speed while Jason hangs off the back of the vehicle, while the other has Jason on a dirt bike, fleeing from a crop duster-style plane. It's nothing we haven't seen before, but the fact it has been used here, less than three months out from the current release date, should mean that we're still on course for November.
As much as PlayStation were probably hoping that the trailer would generate hype for players looking to play the game on their platform specifically, the responses were still universally dominated by those angry at the announcement that they would be leaving physical media behind.
That's particularly pertinent in the case of GTA VI, which is yet another game that is eschewing giving players discs, instead including a code in the box after companies like Nintendo made that commonplace over the last year or two. That adds to the other controversy around the game, where several shops and features are locked behind the $100 edition of the game.
Despite those wider difficulties around the release of GTA VI, there is no doubt that it's going to be an enormous success for Rockstar, with most analysts putting the expected turnover in the first week at anything between $3–5 billion. Couple that with the fact that GTA Online will also be a huge cash cow when it launches later on, and it's difficult to see why the developer would care for too long.
