Magda Szubanski reveals Heath Ledger wanted to play her stalker on Kath and Kim

Magda Szubanski has opened up about the iconic kiss she shared with late actor Heath Ledger at the 2006 AFI Awards in Melbourne, revealing that afterwards he made a bizarre request.

The veteran comedian, 65, who was famously kissed by The Dark Knight star at the ceremony after she approached him mid-interview, has now revealed he called her the following day with an unusual proposal.

Magda attended the ceremony as her iconic Kath and Kim character Sharon Strzelecki and was shocked when Heath decided to play along with her hijinks. 

'We had decided that Sharon, who was in her role as assistant stage manager that night, would ambush Heath and go for the pash. He knew nothing of our plan,' Magda reveals in her upcoming memoir I Can't Tell You But I Will.

'But as soon as Sharon saw Heath, overtaken by my own avatar, she went off-script and screamed. He jumped out of his skin, composed himself, strode over, grabbed my face in his hands and planted one right on me. 

'Then Sharon fainted. These are the actionless moments actors live for.' 

She added that Heath had been so impressed by their 'bit' that he contacted her the next day to ask if he could work with her.

'What came next was even better: Heath rang me the following morning to tell me our red-carpet improv was the most fun he'd had in ages,' Magda wrote. 

'He wanted to float an idea... could he be a guest on Kath and Kim as Sharon's stalker! Mic drop. Heath and I had a few phone calls about it!'

She added that unfortunately it never eventuated due to his tragic death from a prescription medication overdose in 2008.

'We were scheduled to meet in London when the tragic news came through that he'd died,' she wrote.

Magda also reflected on Heath's passing in her new book, which will be released across Australia on Tuesday. 

'The loss of a superb human like Heath reverberates so deeply and widely it is impossible to express. But it is one of the great "what ifs" of my life,' she wrote. 

'What if he hadn't died, could we have kept playing? The delight and hilarity that would have brought to us, and the world... it hurts to think about it.'
