Mariska Hargitay to Host Emmys 2026, the First Woman in 15 Years
Mariska Hargitay to Host Emmys 2026, the First Woman to Emcee in 15 Years
The case is closed on who's hosting the 2026 Emmy Awards.
After all, the Television Academy announced that Mariska Hargitay will host the ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles Sept. 14, making her the first woman to take on the honor since Jane Lynch in 2011.
"NBC continues its 100th birthday celebrations this fall," the July 7 press release shared, "with Emmy Award-winning actor, director, producer and television icon Mariska Hargitay hosting the 78th Emmy Awards."
The dedicated Law & Order: SVU star—who won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 2006 ceremony for her role as Olivia Benson—is grateful to be part of the elite squad taking the stage at the award show, which will air on NBC and Peacock.
"Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career," Hargitay said in the announcement. "It's my great honor to host the 78th Emmy Awards—in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC—and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers."
"Whether it's an actor or a director, a costumer or a sound designer, we are all so privileged to take part in creating television that unites us," she continued. "Regardless of how, where or when we watch, we are together in our laughter, our tears, our love of stories—and our delighted anticipation to see what happens next."
The 62-year-old will be one of four women to lead the award show this century, with Ellen DeGeneres also hosting in 2005 and Heidi Klum co-hosting with Howie Mandel, Jeff Probst, Tom Bergeron and Ryan Seacrest in 2008.
Hargitay's selection comes 15 years after Lynch took on hosting duties, a responsibility the Glee alum did not take lightly.

"It's such a coveted spot and it's the biggest evening in television," she told DigitalSpy in 2011. "So, you want to do it justice. I know I do. I'm humbled by it."
"I'm just staying in the moment, knocking out what I need to knock out, and doing my best for each moment of it," she added. "You take it a piece at a time, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I hope it's a splash."
Despite all the pressures surrounding the job, Lynch was grateful that she hit all the right notes.
"I'm relieved," she said on Kathie Lee & Hoda after the gig. "The relief started right after the opening number. I didn't take a faceplant. Then it went well and it was actually fun. I enjoyed myself."
