Amazon struck gold with its vision for Reacher. The show has singlehandedly turned Prime Video into a go-to destination for 'Dad TV' and turned actor Alan Ritchson into a household name. With its third season gathering more than 50 million viewers, Reacher is at the top of its game, but Netflix is working on a show that could easily topple the action-packed drama.
Why Netflix's Man on Fire Can Compete One-On-One With Prime Video's Reacher
And as for why Man on Fire is such a threat? Well, it all comes down to the show's story and its creative DNA. Quinnell brought the series to life more than 40 years ago, but its thrilling action is just as entertaining today as ever. Man on Fire tells the story of John Creasy, a former Special Forces mercenary who leaves the game behind after climbing to the top of his field. After returning to the United States, Creasy finds himself at odds as his PTSD makes it difficult to start fresh. His mission is then turned upside down when his past comes to bite him, thrusting Creasy on a quest for bloody revenge.
If this story sounds familiar to you, then you are probably a fan of Reacher. Released in February 2022, the hit Amazon drama tells the story of Jack Reacher, a former U.S. Army police officer whose skills are far beyond his years. After leaving the force, Jack begins drifting through the United States and investigating local crimes. From arms trafficking to corrupt politicians, Jack Reacher investigates any crook who hits his radar, and he's not afraid to shed blood along the way.
At a glance, it is easy to see why Man on Fire is destined to make Reacher fans happy. Both shows share a lot: ex-military protagonists, all-out action, revenge plots, the list goes on and on. Ritchson's no-nonsense portrayal of Jack Reacher has been met with high praise, and Netflix's new show has a similar threat on its side: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The award-winning actor will bring Creasy to light in Man on Fire, proving Netflix's ambitious goal for the drama. Abdul-Mateen's talent speaks for itself, but the question is whether Creasy's story is enough to make audiences stray from Reacher.
Reacher Has Gone From Strength To Strength On Prime Video
There is no denying that Reacher is a great show. Addictive and violent, the Prime Video original deserves its spot as a cornerstone on the streaming service. In the show's first season, Ritchson not only proved himself as an action star, but he brought a grounded realism to Lee Child's best-selling novels. Reacher foregoes pretension to focus on grit, delivering high-stakes fight sequences and bloody brawls alongside its slow-burn mysteries. This attention to detail has only grown from season to season, making Reacher one of the most popular series on streaming.
The numbers clearly speak for themselves. Across its three current seasons, Reacher boasts an average rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics. Consistently ranked in Prime Video's top five titles, the thriller is a clear blockbuster for Amazon, and there is more on the way. Prime Video has already ordered a fourth season of the series, and with a spin-off TV show in the works, Reacher's footprint is massive.
Now, Netflix's contender is ready to take a swing at streaming's Dad TV genre. Shows like Landman have found a home with the audience, but Netflix has yet to break into the demographic. If Man on Fire ends up being as good as it sounds, the streaming wars are going to heat up in 2026, and the fire fight could leave Reacher on the sidelines.
Man on Fire will hit Netflix on April 30, 2026.
