Star Trek is in a tough spot. The 59-year-old sci-fi franchise launched a series of streaming shows over the past decade in an attempt to build Paramount Plus into a true Netflix competitor. Now, that effort is winding down as Trekkies prepare for the Original Series' 60th birthday this September. But before then, the last show standing from Star Trek's streaming era will take one more big swing this summer.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered in 2022 as a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery focused on the adventures of the USS Enterprise before Captain James T. Kirk took the helm in the original ‘60s Star Trek. Now that story is nearing its end. Strange New Worlds will conclude with an abridged fifth season focused on Kirk (Paul Wesley) taking over from Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), but before that, season 4 will be devoted entirely to the character-driven, genre-hopping episodes the series does best.
Strange New Worlds season 4 won’t have an overarching villain, and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are making the most of the end of their run with some wild episodes including dinosaurs and muppets. While the plots are episodic, character arcs are serialized, so you might want a refresher about what was going on with the crew of the Enterprise at the end of season 3. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 premiere on July 23.
What happened in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3?
Photo: Marni Grossman/Paramount PlusStrange New Worlds season 2 ended with a cliffhanger as the crew of the Enterprise faced a massive Gorn invasion heading towards Federation space. While they were able to stop the attack in the season 3 premiere, the conflict with the Gorn had lasting consequences. Pike’s girlfriend Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) was infected with Gorn eggs, which would normally burst out of her body and kill her. She was treated with an infusion of augmented Illyrian blood from first officer Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) and a radical procedure that turned her into a human-Gorn hybrid.
Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) broke up with Spock (Ethan Peck) in season 2 before going on a fellowship with archaeologist Roger Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan). Spock hoped to win her back when she returned, taking dance lessons with chief of security La'An Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) to impress Chapel at a Federation Day celebration. He was devastated when Chapel returned dating Korby and wound up hooking up with La’An. La’An was one of several crew members turned into Vulcans in an incredibly silly episode, but because of the augmented DNA she inherited from Khan Noonien Singh, she manifested more Romulan traits. She tried to take over the ship but Spock was able to help her become human again.
Korby led a group of Enterprise crew members on a mission to learn about an ancient species that supposedly achieved immortality and accidentally unleashed a Vezda, a malevolent alien that killed and possessed a medical ensign. The Vezda tried to free the rest of its kind from an ancient prison, but was stopped by Batel, who transformed into a statue to stand as an eternal guardian. Before she did, she gave Pike a vision of growing old with her. It was a special gift given that Pike knows he’s destined to be terribly injured saving Starfleet cadets.
Stopping the Vezda also required some complex ship maneuvers. Spock and Kirk pulled this off by mindmelding so they could act perfectly in sync. The mental link gave them a newfound understanding of each other, building up the friendship that will become key to their future.
