Adam has been writing in the entertainment news space for over a decade. Beginning his career of covering film and TV at CinemaBlend, he has also appeared on The Flash Podcast and done several radio spots.

On September 5, 1992, Batman: The Animated Series premiered on Fox Kids. In sharp contrast with the lighthearted animated Batman TV shows that came before, this show provided a darker take on the DC Comics superhero’s mythology, following suit with the Tim Burton-directed Batman movies. The result was a series that remains critically acclaimed nearly 35 years later, as well as launched the equally beloved DC Animated Universe continuity.

In addition to the many Batman: The Animated Series episodes that are considered masterpieces, the show also stands out for its captivating opening credits. As a variation of Danny Elfman’s Batman theme music plays, two criminals are shown setting off an explosion at a bank after robbing it. Batman soon neutralizes them atop a building with a Batarang and some well-placed punches. Two GCPD officers arrive at the scene and are surprised to find the criminals tied up, and Batman is shown watching from a taller building as lightning lights the Gotham night sky.

Within one minute and without any spoken dialogue, this sequence perfectly captures the tone of the show. 34 years later, the Batman: The Animated Series opening credits are being officially updated, though not as another intro. Instead, Prime Video’s Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 is paying homage to them in an action sequence.

Batman: Caped Crusader Has Its Own Bank Heist Explosion

The first Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 trailer opens with a group of criminals setting off an explosion in front of a Gotham City bank. In keeping with the 1940s-like setting, these seedy characters are all dressed in suits and fedoras, and even the bank’s sign resembles the one from Batman: The Animated Series. Just like last time, Batman shows up to deal with them, except this time, he engages with the criminals in the middle of the heist rather than afterward.

Not only is this a fine callback to the opening credits, it involves direct participation from one of the 1990s show’s key creative talents. Bruce Timm, who co-created Batman: The Animated Series, also developed Batman: Caped Crusader, shares showrunning duties with James Tucker, and executive produces the show with The Batman director Matt Reeves and fellow filmmaker J.J. Abrams, among others. With Caped Crusader also functioning as a spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series, it’s only fitting that it gets its own bank heist sequence.

Along with paying tribute Batman: The Animated Series, this new bank heist highlights how bad things have gotten in Gotham City by the time Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 begins. Commissioner Gordon is heard saying that the city’s police are “losing this fight” against the criminal underworld, and Renee Montoya corrects him by saying that it’s escalated into a “war.” Later in the preview, Bruce Wayne observes to Alfred Pennyworth that there have been more “daylight robberies” and “random shootings” in the last three weeks than in all the prior year.

Things are only going to get worse for Batman and the GCPD from there, as colorful villains like Riddler, Mad Hatter, and an especially frightening take on Man-Bat will surface in Batman: Caped Crusader season 2. Additionally, Harley Quinn will return to Gotham City, and Joker will make his full debut after his cameo in the Batman: Caped Crusader season 1 finale. Bruce Wayne set out to strike fear into the hearts of criminals with his masked persona, but he’ll have even more on his plate in this sophomore outing.

Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 will be released on Prime Video Friday, July 31. The family-friendly Bat-Fam is also available on the streaming service, while the platform’s lineup of non-DC original superhero programming includes Invincible, The Boys, and Spider-Noir. Batman: The Animated Series can be streamed on HBO Max.
