Disclosure Day has already made more than Steven Spielberg's last two movies combined.
The science-fiction film had a strong opening weekend, grossing $93 million worldwide, with $44 million domestically and $49 million internationally. While past Steven Spielberg's movies have dominated the box office with the likes of Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, that was not the case with his last two releases, which were 2021's West Side Story remake and 2022's partly autobiographical drama The Fabelmans.
According to Variety, Disclosure Day has now grossed $160 million worldwide after two weekends in theaters, earning $78 million domestically and $82 million internationally. This is higher than the combined total of West Side Story's $76 million and The Fabelmans' $45.6 million. The new milestone further cements Disclosure Day as Spielberg's most commercially successful movie since 2018's Ready Player One, which went on to make $607.8 million globally.
For West Side Story, it is important to note that its theatrical release was in December 2021, less than a year after movie theaters reopened due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with the industry still struggling to recover. The musical remake had a budget of $100 million and The Fabelmans had a budget of $40 million.
While Spielberg's return to science-fiction is faring much better at the box office than his recent ventures into other genres, the second weekend still saw a sizable 62% drop from its debut. This raises questions about the movie's financial longevity after the stellar opening weekend, especially since it was made on a $115 million budget. In order to be considered profitable after the budget, marketing, and other unseen costs, movies generally need to make back two and a half times the production budget, meaning Disclosure Day needs to ultimately get close to the $300 million mark.
Domestically, Disclosure Day finished in second place this weekend with $17 million. This was far behind Toy Story 5, which generated $164 million, although it was the Pixar sequel's first weekend in theaters, while this was the second for Spielberg's film. Obsession came in third place at the weekend's domestic box office, followed by Backrooms and Scary Movie.
In terms of reception, Disclosure Day's reviews have been positive, including ScreenRant's Alex Harrison giving it nine out of 10 stars, leading to an overall "Certified Fresh" 80% critics' score and 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Rotten Tomatoes scores are not as high as those for West Side Story and The Fabelmans, though, with the former at 91% and 93% and the latter at 92% and 83%. West Side Story received seven Academy Award nominations, with Ariana DeBose winning for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and The Fabelmans also had seven nominations.
Along with being directed by Spielberg, Disclosure Day was written by David Koepp and its music was composed by John Williams. The cast features Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, Wyatt Russell, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, and Elizabeth Marvel.
