With the United Kingdom currently having no Prime Minister, no James Bond, and no Doctor Who, it is in disarray, but hope may not be lost as the latter is set to return this August.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the planned Doctor Who Christmas Special would no longer be going ahead for 2026, alongside the news that its current showrunner, Russell T Davies, would be stepping down. Portrayed by actor Ncuti Gatwa from 2023 to 2025, the role of the Doctor has since been left vacant, and with fans wondering who the next Time Lord will be, this upcoming release may just shed some light on the situation.

Ncuti Gatwa looks intense as the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who.

Doctor Who: Circuit Breaker launched back on 25 June and offers Doctor Who fans the chance to experience a multi-platform story played out across a series of different formats. First announced back in 2025, BBC Studios has recently announced more details surrounding the unique experience, as fans can look forward to a summer filled with audio, publishing, gaming and digital stories during the Whoniverse event.

"The story event will see a single, escalating crisis play out across multiple formats, with each chapter unlocking new clues, new dangers… and a new side to the Time Lord," the official Doctor Who YouTube channel recently revealed.

As such, various Doctor Who publishers will be coming together across the summer, such as Titan Comics, Doctor Who Magazine, BBC Audiobooks, East Side Games, Puffin, BBC Books and Big Finish, in order to introduce new stories to the Doctor Who universe.

However, it is 6 August that is perhaps the most exciting, as it will welcome Castling, a game created by East Side Games and written by Mario Mentasti. Not only that, but our brand-new Doctor will see the incredible Jo Martin return.

First appearing during the Chris Chibnall/Jodie Whittaker era as a forgotten incarnation of the Doctor, Martin will be piloting the Tardis in Castling as she aims to deal with a "single, escalating crisis". As exciting as this is, could this mean that Martin may be our next fully-fledged Doctor when the show returns? It remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that her role in Castling will see fans flock to her side when the time comes.

As for the full synopsis of Castling, it still remains a mystery, but with the game's title taking the name of a chess move, we could perhaps expect the strategy game to be involved in some way, or at least when it comes to staying one step ahead of your enemies.

Luckily, we do not have long to wait, as Castling is expected to drop on 6 August, and with it, giving us a look at our brand-new Doctor Who lead in action.
