‘Shaun the Sheep: The Beast From Mossy Bottom’ Trailer: Aardman Takes on Monster Movies in Stop-Motion Parody
In 2005, beloved British stop-motion animation company Aardman Animations brought its popular “Wallace & Gromit” short film series to feature-length status via “The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” a parody of classic horror and monster movies that saw the inventor and his dog try and solve the case of a giant monster rabbit eating their town’s vegetables. Now, the company is going back to that familiar inspiration with its latest film, “Shaun the Sheep: The Beast From Mossy Bottom.” GKIDS released the latest trailer for the film, which lovingly parodies mad scientist films, on June 24.
Created by Nick Park, the man behind “Wallace & Gromit” and “Chicken Run,” “Shaun the Sheep” is a stop-motion animated series that has run intermittently from 2007 all the way to 2025, consisting of seven seasons and 190 episodes. The show follows the titular Shaun, who lives on a quiet British farm with his flock and is constantly trying to add excitement to their quaint lifestyles, often causing trouble for their farmer and the sheepdog Bitzer. Since its inception, the series has won five International Emmy Awards and has received two movie spinoffs, 2015’s “Shaun the Sheep Movie” and 2019’s “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.”
The logline for the film reads: “‘Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom‘ sees the residents of Mossy Bottom Farm looking forward to Halloween – until the clumsy Farmer trashes the Flock’s beloved pumpkin patch. When Shaun turns mad scientist to fix the problem, things rapidly spiral out of control… With The Farmer missing and a wild beast roaming the woods of Mossingham, all the ingredients are in place for a monstrously fun family adventure.”
“The Beast From Mossy Bottom” is directed by Steve Cox and Matthew Walker, longtime animators at Aardman who are making their feature directorial debuts; Cox previously directed the “Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas” TV special. The film features a screenplay written by Mark Burton, who directed “Shaun the Sheep Movie,” and Giles Pilbrow.
GKIDS will release “Shaun the Sheep: The Beast From Mossy Bottom” in U.S. theaters on September 18. Watch the trailer for the film below.
