Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dutton Ranch.Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler are one of the best couples on TV, but Taylor Sheridan's new show just canceled their Yellowstone story. Beth and Rip's new show, Dutton Ranch, had a great first season. It received overall positive reviews, the finale of Dutton Ranch season 1 was solid and filled with action, and Dutton Ranch season 2 has already been confirmed even before the first season finished.
As solid as Dutton Ranch season 1 was, it also undid some important moments from Yellowstone. The finale of Yellowstone wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, partially due to Kevin Costner's departure, but it had some good moments and laid the groundwork for both Dutton Ranch and Kayce's spinoff series, Marshals. While the Yellowstone spinoff shows have mostly honored the way the original show ended, they've also undone key parts of the original's finale.
The ending of Yellowstone saw Kayce and Beth sell the titular Dutton family ranch to Chief Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation. That was the reason Beth, Rip, and their adoptive son Carter ended up leaving and eventually settling in Rio Paloma, Texas, in Dutton Ranch. That part of the finale has survived, but Dutton Ranch has canceled a core part of Beth and Rip's story even as the show itself has been renewed for another season.
Beth & Rip Earned A Quiet Life At The End Of Yellowstone
The finale of Yellowstone was the ending of the show, but it was also an ending for its characters. The final episode, on the whole, wasn't perfect, but the ending of both Beth and Rip's character arcs were a highlight of the finale. At the end of Yellowstone, Beth and Rip earned a quiet life that they got all to themselves and Carter. They bought a ranch in Dillon, Montana, away from tourists, and built a humble but satisfying life for themselves.
Beth and Rip's Yellowstone ending was great. After all the fighting, suffering, and sinning they did over the course of five seasons, Beth and Rip got to choose themselves and the life they were building together. Neither of them had to do John Dutton III's bidding anymore, they didn't have to defend a massive ranch that was being assailed on all sides, and they could finally enjoy life. Rip got his own horses and land to take care of for himself instead of for another man, and Beth got the love of her life, a child, and a chance to heal from the trauma of her past.
There were some problems with Beth and Rip's ending, like the way she killed Jamie and how the dust all settled, but on the whole it was satisfying. Even Kelly Reilly said she was happy with Beth's peaceful ending and her chance to enjoy life instead of fighting for it tooth and nail. After everything she went through, Beth earned a moment of peace and Rip earned a life that was his own. Unfortunately, that wasn't meant to last.
Dutton Ranch Put Beth & Rip Right Back Where They Started
As satisfying as the conclusion to Beth and Rip's story in Yellowstone was, Dutton Ranch came and ruined it. The very first episode of Dutton Ranch reveals that the couple's Dillon, Montana ranch has been destroyed in a wildfire, forcing them to move to Texas. Both literally and symbolically, Dutton Ranch destroyed the ending Yellowstone gave Beth and Rip and canceled the original ending of their story.
Dutton Ranch Officially Proves Killing Off John Dutton Was The Best Thing For Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone Character
Dutton Ranch episode 5 evokes John Dutton in a way that smooths over his faults and rehabilitates the former Montana Governor's spotty reputation.
Now, instead of living the quiet, peaceful, and love-filled life they earned in Yellowstone, Beth and Rip are facing the exact same problems they were in the middle of the original series. Throughout Dutton Ranch season 1, they have to deal with the 10-Petals trying to take their land, they run afoul of the cartel, and they have to deal with Carter being abducted. Beth and Rip are beset on all sides with new problems to deal with and threats to their land and their way of life.
The peaceful conclusion Yellowstone gave Beth and Rip has been completely undone. The only real difference between Dutton Ranch and Yellowstone season 5, part 1 is that they're in Texas instead of Montana now. Their conclusion and the happy, quiet, and peaceful life they earned may as well not have happened at all. Beth is still clawing to life and dealing with the years of trauma she had, and Rip is still doing unsavory acts for the future of a ranch. Dutton Ranch may be continuing Yellowstone's story, but it's blatantly ignoring the original's ending for Rip and Beth.
