After a 16-year hiatus, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Again? is bringing the franchise back to life this year.
Netflix has officially announced that Why Did I Get Married Again?, the third installment in Perry's hit dramedy franchise, is officially releasing on September 9. The streamer also unveiled the first poster for the new film, featuring new looks at the threequel's new and returning stars, which can be viewed below:
Additionally, the first two movies will be added to the streamer on Friday, July 3. They're currently available to stream on Peacock.
Why Did I Get Married? was one of Perry's first films when it was released in 2007. Not only did he star in the movie as Dr. Terry Brock, he also wrote the script and served as director and producer. The dramedy, based on Perry's play that debuted four years earlier, told the story of multiple couples who try to improve their relationships by going on a retreat. However, it ended up devolving into a chaotic and tension-filled experience.
Perry's co-stars included Sharon Leal, Malik Yoba, Janet Jackson, Michael Jai White, Tasha Smith, Richard T. Jones, Jill Scott, Lamman Rucker, Denise Boutte, Keesha Sharp and Kaira Whitehead.
Jackson's performance as Dr. Patricia Agnew landed the singer an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, while Perry and Scott received nominations in the Outstanding Supporting Actor and Outstanding Actress categories, respectively, while the film was up for Outstanding Motion Picture.
Debuting at the top of the box office on opening weekend, Why Did I Get Married? went on to gross $55.86 million throughout its theatrical run, but the film received largely negative reviews and a 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Three years later, Perry released the sequel Why Did I Get Married Too?, which performed about the same at the box office ($60.67 million) but was widely panned by critics, earning a much lower Rotten Tomatoes score than the first film with 27%. On the bright side, Jackson, Scott and the movie once again scored NAACP nominations, while Perry received a nod for Outstanding Writing for a Motion Picture.
