Netflix has had mixed luck with its adaptations, but 2027 is set up to be absolutely golden. The streaming platform has been bringing books, manga, and anime to live action for years, and for a good chunk of that time, approval wasn't particularly high. Projects like Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, and a handful more were absolute disasters, and Netflix's bad attempts became something of a joke. However, in 2023, the platform really turned things around.

While there was significant hype surrounding the premiere of Netflix's live-action One Piece series, it was difficult to imagine things actually working out. The original manga and anime are entirely over-the-top, even by anime standards, with a unique and colorful world and art style. It was a tall order, but, rather miraculously, Netflix pulled through. One Piece season 1 was hit with an 86% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and season 2 turned up the volume by claiming a perfect 100% score.

Now, Netflix is preparing to launch One Piece season 3 in 2027, and with two successful installments under its belt, we have plenty of reason to get excited. These upcoming episodes will dive into the Alabasta arc, easily one of the most exciting and beloved of Eiichiro Oda's overarching series. The tone of One Piece will shift slightly, driving up the intensity as the Straw Hat pirates are challenged as never before. Even more critically, One Piece season 3 is where Luffy will face off with his most challenging opponent, and this is bound to be spectacular in live-action.

Luffy Vs. Crocodile In One Piece Season 3 Will Be The Peak For Netflix Adaptations

Joe Manganiello as Crocodile in season 2 of One Piece

One Piece season 3 is officially titled The Battle of the Alabasta, and fans of the manga know exactly what that means. The finale of season 2 unveiled Joe Manganiello's Sir Crocodile, setting up a series of explosive on-screen battles in 2027. The Alabasta arc in the manga and anime was certainly exceptional, but based on what we have already seen in One Piece, the visual and emotional results of bringing this to live action will be something else entirely.

Sir Crocodile is one of One Piece's Seven Warlords of the Sea, making him Luffy's greatest challenge yet. This won't simply be one exciting brawl. Rather, Luffy's journey to facing Crocodile as an equal will be an agonizing process. The villain has consumed the Sand-Sand Fruit, making him essentially impervious to Luffy's physical attacks. Add in the fact that Crocodile is a terrifying mastermind, and things truly look impossible for Luffy and his crew, for a time.

Of course, the challenges of a villain like Crocodile coax out the memorable, wholesome heart of One Piece and its characters. Luffy is determined and resilient, and his impervious, optimistic willpower makes him the perfect enemy for this warlord. Suffice it to say that, as great as the live-action One Piece has been so far, things are only just getting started heading into season 3. This is the moment that Netflix will truly shine.

Luffy Vs. Crocodile Isn't The Only Highlight Of One Piece Season 3

Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D Luffy in the One Piece Season 2 Live Action

One Piece season 3 should have a lot more to offer than just those three Luffy vs. Sir Crocodile battles. This upcoming installment is all set to introduce a handful of new characters, including Crocodile's syndicate, Baroque Works, which is made up of several unique fighters, Luffy's own brother, Portgas D. Ace (played by Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña), and the very eccentric former Baroque officer, Bon Clay. We will also get more from season 2's Princess Vivi (Charithra Chandran) as One Piece shifts its scale significantly for a more grand, sweeping adventure.

The world-building and political lore of One Piece is about to get more intense as well. The live-action show's first two seasons effectively set the stage, but this is where things become more intricate. Oda is a storytelling genius, and while that's evident in these first arcs of Netflix's adaptation, those unfamiliar with the canon story should prepare to have their minds blown (and their hearts broken). It's difficult to say which adaptation Netflix will tackle next or whether it will be a success, but there's little doubt that 2027's live-action One Piece will get us started right.
