The Bear had a meteoric rise in popularity since the first season landed on Disney+ back in 2022, which eventually led to the show having an odd cameo problem. The Bear has been on an incredible journey with a remarkable reception from audiences and critics, standing out as one of the most authentic and engaging new shows of the 2020s.

However, as is the case with so many projects, when they get some traction, it seems as though the opportunities for the show expanded exponentially after those early seasons, and ultimately, this resulted in the show leaning in to some things that distracted a little from the story and transformed it into a spectacle.

The Bear Season's 3 & 4 Were Full Of Cameos

From the start, The Bear managed to attract some remarkable talent to appear in smaller roles in the series. From Jon Bernthal's role as the deceased older brother of Carmen Berzatto, Mikey, to the legendary Molly Ringwald's brief stint as the Moderator in season 1, the show boasted an impressive cast of cameos.

However, later seasons, specifically season 3 and season 4, took this to a whole new level with several episodes that featured a stacked cast of cameo performers, which ended up taking the spotlight from the main characters and taking some audiences out of the story as numerous famous faces joined the fray.

After the stunning extended episode "Fishes," which introduced the Bear family and featured standout actors like Bob Odenkirk, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Paulson, Gillian Jacobs, and even comedian John Mulaney, the charm of having a veritable cast of elite performers seemed like a good idea.

However, when season 3 introduced even more famous faces like John Cena, Josh Hartnett, and many more new and returning guest stars, it seemed to become a trope. This continued into the fourth season, with Rob Reiner and Brie Larson, along with several others, joining the cast. Unfortunately, at times this ended up feeling more distracting than entertaining.

Now, while some characters become integrated into the main cast, such as Will Poulter joining The Bear kitchen as a regular, the final season of The Bear thankfully tones down the number of cameos, which is a massive win for the series and the story as a whole. Without so many other famous actors taking up space on the screen, there is more room for the central cast to explore their dynamics and progress in their individual stories.

At the end of the day, The Bear is a series that is extremely character-driven, and maintaining the focus on these people is the most fulfilling and meaningful way for the show to progress the narrative. Cameos can help the show to stand out, and it can provide surprising moments that get the audience talking and sharing, but after four seasons, The Bear doesn't need a hook to bring the audience in, we are already addicted to watching these characters.

All of this is not to say that the cameos were a mistake. By all means, the earlier cameos likely helped to launch the series and get more people watching. And the casting of the Berzatto family as a whole host of Hollywood icons was very clever, and each actor brought dimension and complexity to their characters. But the story is at its best when Carmy, Syd, Richie, and the rest of the kitchen staff are together.

These are the vocal points of the series, and seeing them take steps forward (and often backwards too) is sincerely a treat. The Bear season 5 recognizes the importance of the central cast, and thankfully, at this pivotal moment when the show begins to wind down and close its doors for good, it dedicates time to the characters who make the show what it is.
