Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Widow's Bay season 1, episode 10, "We Hope You Enjoyed Your Time!"Widow's Bay director and executive producer Hiro Murai breaks down the season 1 finale's major plot twist.

In Widow's Bay season 1, episode 9, Ruth Livingston (Katherine Callan) is seemingly revealed to be the last Warren descendant, and Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) sets out to kill her, so the curse on the island can finally end. However, the finale brings another twist, which is that Ruth had a secret daughter, Lauren, who was Tom's wife, which means that his son, Evan Loftis (Kingston Rumi Southwick), is actually the final Warren descendant.

During an interview with TV Insider, Murai discusses this plot twist and what it means for season 2. He explains how it creates a reset for a season-long arc while also making it possible to do more small, anthology-style episodes. The director also teases the "complicated dynamic" between Tom and Sheriff Bechir Clemmons (Kevin Carroll), who both went to Ruth's house with the intention of killing her, and who share the secret of what really happened that night. Check out Murai's comments below:

What I love about the show is that it can do both. It can do the season arc lore stories, also drop down into bottle episodes where you can just watch episodes out of order. And so what I love about how the season concluded is that it resets the table so you can do small, episodic, anthology episodes again, but there’s the added complication that Tom knows about Evan, he has to protect him from getting out to the rest of the island that he is the last descendant. Bechir and him have a secret together. They both know that they went to Ruth’s to kill her. And so there’s a complicated dynamic there. I just think it just ratchets up what works in the show, what’s been working in the first season, without changing the dynamics.

The arc of Widow's Bay season 1 sees Tom trying to force the island into becoming a tourist destination, followed by accepting supernatural truths and fighting against them for the sake of his son and everyone else. Heading into season 2, he has completely pivoted away from making the island the next Martha's Vineyard or attempting to break the curse on it, as his priority is now to conceal the truth about Evan, regardless of what that means for the island's residents and all who visit.

This sets up the next season-long arc, but with the curse unbroken, as Murai suggests, there is potential to do more episodes focused on further standalone horrors, like season 1's Sea Hag or Boogeyman. Tom will also have to contend with Bechir, who knows that the last Warren descendant is still out there, but not that it's Evan. With Bechir having his own child about to be born, he shot Ruth with the intention of killing her, so he may be willing to do the same to Evan.

Meanwhile, despite how close Tom grew to Wyck (Stephen Root) and Patricia (Kate O'Flynn) in season 1, he will probably want to keep the truth from them too. They are under the impression that the deadly storm stopped because of Ruth's fate, but it's actually because of Kenny (Michael Malvesti) being sacrificed to the evil entity, which Evan heard happen from behind the sealed door.

Since Widow's Bay season 2 was renewed ahead of the season 1 finale, it's confirmed that there will be a follow-up to the game-changing twist involving Evan. Along with a near-perfect 97% critics' score and a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the series created by Katie Dippold has become a word-of-mouth hit, which has received further awareness after being praised by Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima. As of this writing, it is in third place on Apple TV's worldwide streaming charts and number one in the U.S.

All Widow's Bay season 1 episodes are now streaming on Apple TV.
